Kibuli is a remote village on an island near the mouth of the Fly River, in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, close to the northern edge of the Torres Strait. It is one of the more isolated places a traveler might reach in the region, set in a landscape of rivers, mangroves and forest where communities live largely by subsistence farming and fishing. There are no roads in; access is by boat. Travelers typically fly to Daru, the provincial town, then continue to the coastal settlement of Mabaduan before a long river journey upstream to Kibuli, so any visit needs careful planning, local contacts and plenty of time. A small community-based eco-tourism initiative has been set up in the village. The climate is hot and humid year-round, with heavy rain in the wet season, and river conditions shape when travel is practical.
