Khujand is the second-largest city of Tajikistan, in the north of the country, in the fertile Fergana Valley on the Syr Darya river, in Central Asia. One of the oldest cities in the region, with a history going back over two thousand years to the time of Alexander the Great, Khujand was an important stop on the Silk Road and remains a green, pleasant city and a major cultural and industrial centre of the north. Its sights include a historic citadel and museum, the large and lively Panjshanbe bazaar, one of the grandest markets in Central Asia, and mosques and a mausoleum by the river. Set in the productive valley between mountains, it is quite distinct from the capital, Dushanbe, across the ranges to the south. Khujand is reached by flights into its airport and by road through the mountains. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cool winters.
