Khamti, also spelled Hkamti, is a town in the north of the Sagaing region, in northwestern Myanmar, on the banks of the great Chindwin river, near the border with Kachin State. It is the main town of the Hkamti district, set in a remote, fertile and heavily forested region rich in natural resources, where rice is grown along the river and there are reserves of gold and jade. The town takes its name from the Khamti people, a Tai group who settled along the Chindwin long ago and whose name is said to mean place of gold. This is one of the more isolated parts of the country, far up the Chindwin valley. Please note that Myanmar has faced conflict and instability, and it is essential to check current government travel advice before any journey. Khamti is reached by air and by river and road up the Chindwin. The climate is warm and monsoonal.
