Kerteh, also spelled Kertih, is a coastal town in the Kemaman district of Terengganu, on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is best known as a petroleum hub, the Terengganu base for the national oil company Petronas, with refineries and a gas-processing complex whose lights along the shore have earned it the nickname the City of Lights. Beyond the industry, the surrounding coast has quiet, long beaches such as Kemasik, and inland there are forest recreation areas with waterfalls and walking trails. Kerteh lies on the main coastal route between Kuantan to the south and Kuala Terengganu to the north, and has its own small airport, originally built for offshore helicopter operations and now served by some domestic flights. The northeast monsoon from around November to February brings heavy rain and rougher seas to the east coast.
