Kerben is a town in the southwest of Kyrgyzstan, in Central Asia, the administrative centre of the Aksy district in the Jalal-Abad region, set at around 1,200 metres in the foothills on the northern edge of the great Fergana valley. It lies in a scenic upland region of mountains, valleys and rivers, in one of the more remote corners of the country, a long way from the regional centre of Jalal-Abad. Once known as Karavan, the town lies near old caravan routes, and medieval travellers noted a caravanserai, a fortified halt for merchants, close to this spot. Kerben is a quiet provincial town serving the surrounding farming and pastoral communities of the Aksy district, in a beautiful landscape of the Tien Shan foothills. Kerben is reached by road across the mountains and valleys of southern Kyrgyzstan. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters.
