Kelafo is a town in the east of Ethiopia, in the Somali region, in the low, dry country of the Ogaden, on the banks of the Shabelle river near the border with Somalia. It lies in a hot, semi-desert landscape of acacia scrub and open plains, where the river brings a ribbon of green and water to an otherwise arid land, sustaining farming and the herds of the pastoral Somali people who live here. Kelafo is a modest market town rather than a tourist destination, known for its lively local markets, its camels and its riverside setting, with a long history reaching back to old Muslim sultanates that once ruled this region from the Shabelle valley. Kelafo is reached by road across the dry lands of the Somali region and by a local airport. The climate is hot and arid, with high temperatures year-round and little, seasonal rain.
