Kavanayen is a remote village in the Gran Sabana, in the far southeast of Venezuela, deep within the great Canaima National Park in the state of Bolivar. It is an indigenous village, home mainly to the Pemon people, and was founded as a Capuchin mission in the 1940s, its old stone mission church standing out in this wild landscape. The Gran Sabana is one of the most spectacular landscapes in South America, a high plateau of grassland, rivers and waterfalls, dotted with the tepuis, the flat-topped table mountains the Pemon call the houses of the spirits. Kavanayen is a starting point for exploring this extraordinary region. Kavanayen is reached by rough tracks across the Gran Sabana and by light aircraft, so travel needs planning; for any trip to Venezuela, check current government advice. The climate is mild for the tropics, thanks to the altitude, with a very wet season.
