Kardla is the main town of Hiiumaa, the second-largest island in Estonia, lying in the Baltic Sea off the country's west coast. It is a quiet, green town of low wooden houses that serves as the gateway to the island's unhurried landscape of pine forest, coastline and small villages. Hiiumaa is known for its lighthouses, including the Kopu lighthouse, one of the oldest continuously operating lighthouses in the world, and the Tahkuna and Ristna points at its western end. The island has a relaxed pace, with cycling routes, beaches and nature reserves. Kardla is reached by ferry from the mainland port of Rohukula to Heltermaa, followed by a short drive, or by a small domestic flight from Tallinn to Kardla airport. Summer is the most popular season, when the island is mild and the days are long.
