Kandi is a town in the far north of Benin, in West Africa, the capital of the Alibori department, in the dry savanna country near the borders with Niger and Nigeria. It stands on the main north-south highway that runs the length of the country, several hundred kilometres from the coastal cities, and is an important commercial and administrative centre for the north. Kandi is above all a market and farming town at the heart of Benin's cotton-growing region, with cotton-ginning among its main industries, along with grains and other crops. It has a fine central mosque in the Sudano-Sahelian style, and lies within reach of the great W and Pendjari national parks, part of a UNESCO-listed complex famous for elephants, lions and other wildlife. Kandi is reached by road and by a local airport. The climate is hot and semi-arid, with a single rainy season.
