Kandersteg is a mountain village in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, at the head of the Kander valley, a classic alpine resort surrounded by high peaks; it has no airport of its own and is reached by train and mountain road, with the nearest airports at Bern, Zurich and Geneva. Its most famous sight is the Oeschinensee, a stunning turquoise mountain lake ringed by cliffs and glaciers, reached by cable car and a short walk and part of a UNESCO World Heritage area, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Alps. Nearby is the deep-blue Blausee, and the village is a great base for hiking and mountaineering in summer and for cross-country skiing and winter walking in the colder months. Kandersteg is also the northern portal of the Lotschberg railway tunnel, where car-carrying trains shuttle through to the Valais. The climate is alpine, with mild summers, the main season, and snowy winters.
