Kamaran is the largest of Yemen's islands in the Red Sea, lying off the country's western coast, near the mainland in the southern Red Sea. It is a low, arid coral island with a long history as a port and quarantine station on the pilgrimage sea routes, fringed by clear waters, coral reefs and mangroves, known for its pearl fishing. In calmer times it held potential as a diving and beach destination for its unspoiled reefs. However, Yemen has been devastated by prolonged armed conflict and humanitarian crisis, and the country is considered extremely dangerous; governments strongly advise against all travel, and there is no tourist infrastructure. It is essential to rely on current official advice, which is likely to warn against any travel. Kamaran is reached by boat from the Yemeni coast, though access is unsafe and impractical under current conditions. The climate is very hot and dry.
