Jashore (historically spelled Jessore) is a city in southwestern Bangladesh and a divisional gateway in the Khulna region; JSR is the code for its airport, one of the country's oldest, with domestic flights to and from Dhaka. Jashore is best known as the flower capital of Bangladesh: the Gadkhali and Panisara area, about 20 km from the city, is a vast flower-growing hub where thousands of farmers cultivate marigolds, roses, gerberas and gladiolus, at its most colorful from December to April. The region is also famous for khejur gur, the prized date-palm jaggery tapped from trees in the cool season. Jashore has a long history, with sites linked to the poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt at Sagardari, and serves as a road and rail junction toward Khulna and the Sundarbans mangrove forest. The cooler winter months are the most comfortable for visiting.
