Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city and the capital of Gauteng province, a high-altitude metropolis that grew out of the 1886 gold rush and is still nicknamed the City of Gold, or eGoli. Most international visitors arrive at OR Tambo International Airport, the busiest airport in Africa and a major gateway to the wider region. The city is central to South Africa's modern history: the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill trace the struggle against apartheid, while nearby Soweto is home to the Mandela House on Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum. Just outside the city lies the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage site with some of the world's most important hominin fossil finds at Sterkfontein. Johannesburg is also a springboard for Kruger National Park and Sun City. The dry, sunny highveld climate makes most of the year pleasant.
