Yambol (also spelled Jambol) is a city in southeastern Bulgaria, set on both banks of the Tundzha river on the Thracian Plain, and the administrative center of Yambol Province. It is best reached by road or rail from Burgas on the Black Sea coast, about an hour to the east, or from the capital Sofia further west. The city's main draw is the nearby archaeological reserve of Kabile, an important ancient Thracian city about 10 km away, with restored layers from Thracian, Hellenistic and Roman times on the Zaychi Vrah hill beside a bend in the Tundzha. Each February Yambol hosts Kukerlandia, a large festival of Kukeri mummers whose elaborate costumes and masks draw groups from across Bulgaria. Yambol works well as a cultural stop between Sofia and the coast.
