Jalalabad is a city in the east of Afghanistan, the capital of the Nangarhar province, set in a lowland valley on the Kabul river, between Kabul and the famous Khyber Pass on the border with Pakistan. It is a warm, green, low-lying city, milder than the mountains around it, historically an important stop on the trade route between Kabul and Peshawar, and a centre of orchards and farmland. Jalalabad is the main city of eastern Afghanistan and a gateway for trade with Pakistan through the Khyber Pass. It is essential to rely on current official advice, which will warn against any travel. Jalalabad is reached by road from Kabul, though travel is unsafe. The climate is warm, hot in summer and mild in winter.
