Isiro is a town in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Central Africa, the capital of the Haut-Uele Province, in the great rainforests of the northern Congo. It lies in a region of dense tropical forest, rivers and scattered towns, a former colonial administrative and railway centre, historically linked to mining and forest products. The wider region is one of vast forest, home to remarkable wildlife, near areas important for okapi, the rare forest relative of the giraffe unique to the Congo. Isiro is a modest regional centre rather than a tourist destination, in a remote and often difficult part of the country. Because parts of the DR Congo can be affected by instability, travelers should check current advice. Isiro is reached by air to its airport and by long, rough roads through the forest. The climate is hot, humid and equatorial, with heavy rainfall.
