IRA is the airport code for Kirakira Airport, serving the town of Kirakira, the capital of Makira-Ulawa Province in the Solomon Islands, in the South Pacific. Kirakira is a small coastal town on the northern side of Makira, formerly called San Cristobal, a large, rugged and heavily forested island in the far southeast of the Solomons. It is a quiet provincial centre and a base for a remote region of rainforest, rivers, reefs and traditional villages, rather than a developed tourist destination. Makira is one of the more off-the-beaten-track parts of an already little-visited country, of interest for its wild nature and cultures. Kirakira is reached by domestic flights to its airstrip from the capital, Honiara, on Guadalcanal, and by inter-island boat. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall for much of the year.
