IOP is the airport code for Ioma, a small settlement and airstrip in Oro Province, sometimes called Northern Province, in the east of Papua New Guinea, inland from the coast in the basin of the Mamba and Kumusi rivers. It lies in a remote area of lowland rainforest, rivers and grassland, backed by the mountains inland, a local centre for scattered villages rather than a town of any size. This is not a tourist destination and has minimal services, of interest mainly for its remote setting and the traditional life of the region rather than any developed attractions. Ioma is reached chiefly by light aircraft to its airstrip, weather permitting, and by rough tracks and river travel, so any journey here needs local arrangements and time. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall for much of the year, typical of this part of Papua New Guinea.
