IMK is the airport code for the airstrip at Simikot, a remote mountain town in the far northwest of Nepal, the headquarters of Humla, one of the country's most isolated districts, high in the Himalaya near the border with Tibet. Set at around 2,900 metres among high mountains, Simikot is a small town of stone houses and terraced fields, the starting point for some of Nepal's wildest and least-visited trekking country. It is best known as a gateway for pilgrims and trekkers heading toward the sacred Mount Kailash in Tibet, and to the remote Limi valley, where Tibetan Buddhist culture survives almost untouched. Simikot has no road connection and is reached only on foot or by air, by small aircraft from Nepalgunj on the lowland plains. The climate is cool to cold, with harsh winters at altitude and a milder summer.
