Imbaimadai is a small, remote community in the Pakaraima mountains of western Guyana, on the upper reaches of the Mazaruni river, in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region of the country's forested interior. It grew up as a base for small-scale gold and diamond mining, which has long drawn prospectors to the mineral-rich rivers and backlands of the area, on the edge of Amerindian lands. The setting is spectacular: a high country of quartzite ridges, tumbling rivers and waterfalls, and cloud forest, part of the great highland region that rises toward Mount Roraima and the tepui table-mountains near the borders with Venezuela and Brazil. It is fine country for birding and short hikes. Imbaimadai is reached mainly by light aircraft, landing at its airstrip, as there are no roads into this part of the interior. The climate is warm and wet, tropical highland.
