Iamalele is a settlement on Fergusson Island, the largest of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands, off the eastern tip of Papua New Guinea, in Milne Bay Province. Fergusson is a rugged, volcanic island of forested mountains, hot springs, geysers and boiling mud pools, one of the geothermally active islands of the D'Entrecasteaux group, ringed by reef and set in the waters of the Solomon Sea. Iamalele is a local mission and community centre on the island rather than a tourist destination, of interest for its remote island setting, its volcanic landscapes and the traditional cultures of Milne Bay, a region known for its islands, canoes and customs. Iamalele is reached by boat among the islands of Milne Bay and by a local airstrip, with connections through Alotau, the provincial capital. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall.
