Beyond the memorial, Zhijiang functions as a modest county town within Hunan's wider Huaihua region, with a quieter, largely local pace outside its one landmark site, and everyday life here still centers on local markets and small-scale farming rather than any tourism economy built around the wartime history. The region's better-known tourist draw, the riverside ancient town of Fenghuang with its stilted wooden houses and old stone bridges, sits a further drive away within the same broader area of western Hunan, and travelers often combine a Zhijiang stop with a longer Fenghuang visit rather than treating the two as adjacent day trips. Zhijiang Airport (HJJ) offers domestic flights, chiefly connecting to regional and provincial hubs, though schedules are narrower than at major Chinese airports, and travelers should confirm current routes before relying on a direct flight. Ground transport by bus or hired car covers the connection onward to Huaihua city and toward Fenghuang, since rail and road links in this hilly part of Hunan take real time to cover.
