Hingurakgoda is a town in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, in the heart of the island's Cultural Triangle and close to the ancient royal city of Polonnaruwa. It sits in the dry-zone plains of tanks (ancient reservoirs) and paddy fields, and serves as a gateway to some of Sri Lanka's greatest attractions: the UNESCO-listed ruins of Polonnaruwa, a medieval capital with superb temples, statues and palaces, and the national parks of Minneriya and Kaudulla, famous for the annual Gathering, when hundreds of wild elephants congregate around the shrinking reservoirs in the dry season. The wider region also lies within reach of Sigiriya rock fortress. Hingurakgoda has a historic airfield and is a practical base for exploring the Cultural Triangle. The dry season, roughly May to September, is best for the elephant Gathering and archaeological sites.
