Hengchun's name literally translates to 'perpetual spring,' a fitting label for a town whose real draw is the subtropical coastline and national park stretching south from its gates rather than the town itself as a headline destination. Hengchun holds one of Taiwan's few still-intact sets of historic city walls and gates, built during the Qing dynasty, and walking the old town's preserved ramparts gives visitors a genuine, uncrowded piece of Taiwanese history before continuing on to the coast. The town functions as the practical gateway to Kenting National Park, Taiwan's first national park, which combines sandy beaches, coral-reef snorkeling, dramatic coastal cliffs and a well-known surf break at Jialeshui with inland tropical forest and grassland. Eluanbi, the lighthouse marking Taiwan's southernmost point, sits within the same park area and gives visitors a genuine geographic landmark to pair with the beaches. Hengchun's own small airstrip sees little to no regular scheduled service, so travelers should not plan around flying directly in; the practical gateway is Kaohsiung International Airport, followed by a bus or rental car drive south of roughly one and a half to two hours depending on traffic and final destination within the park. Once in the Hengchun-Kenting area, a scooter or rental car is genuinely useful for reaching the park's spread-out beaches and viewpoints, though the old town itself is compact and walkable. Local seafood and night-market snacks around Hengchun's main streets round out an evening once the day's beach or park time winds down, giving the town a genuine small-scale character beyond its walls and gates. Seasonally, the cooler, drier months from around October through April offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring Kenting's beaches and the old town walls without summer's intense heat, while summer brings hot, humid weather and the occasional typhoon that can disrupt travel along Taiwan's south coast, so travelers in that season should watch forecasts.
