Gurue is a town in the highlands of Zambezia Province in central Mozambique, set amid green hills and mountains that make it the heart of the country's tea-growing region. Surrounded by tea estates planted in the colonial era, it enjoys a cool, misty highland climate unusual for Mozambique, and rolling scenery of plantations, waterfalls and peaks. Above the town rises Mount Namuli, the second-highest mountain in Mozambique, a striking granite massif that draws hikers and is important both ecologically and in local Makua tradition. Gurue is a working agricultural town rather than an established tourist centre, but its tea landscapes, cool air and mountain setting give it a distinctive appeal in the highlands of central Mozambique. The climate is mild by Mozambican standards with a wet season roughly November to April; the drier, cooler months are the best time for hiking and travel.
