Guriaso is a remote locality in Sandaun Province, also known as West Sepik, in the far north-west of Papua New Guinea near the border with the Indonesian province of Papua. It lies in a rugged, thinly populated region of rainforest, rivers and mountains, deep in one of the least-developed and most isolated parts of the country. This is not a tourist destination but a zone of scattered villages and subsistence life, part of the broad, remote hinterland of the Sepik region far from any road network. For the rare traveller, the wider Sepik is known for its extraordinary river cultures and art, but a locality like Guriaso is genuine frontier territory reached only by light aircraft to small airstrips or by long, difficult overland and river journeys. The tropical climate is hot, humid and very wet; the drier stretches are marginally easier for travel, though conditions are always demanding.
