Goba is a highland town in the Bale Zone of the Oromia Region in south-eastern Ethiopia, the main gateway to the magnificent Bale Mountains National Park. Set high in the Bale massif, it is the base for exploring one of Ethiopia's greatest wilderness areas - a landscape of Afro-alpine moorland, the high Sanetti Plateau crossed by one of the highest all-weather roads in Africa, the cloud-forested Harenna Forest on the southern slopes, and rare wildlife including the endangered Ethiopian wolf and the endemic mountain nyala. The nearby Sof Omar Caves, a vast river-carved cave system, add to the region's appeal. Goba itself is a cool, modest town serving as the practical hub for park visits, treks and wildlife trips. The highland climate is cool year-round; the drier months, roughly October to March, are the best time for the mountains and wildlife.
