Gizo is the second-largest town in the Solomon Islands and the capital of Western Province, set on the small island of Ghizo in the country's spectacular Western Province - a region of islands, lagoons and reefs in the south-west Pacific. A relaxed waterfront town, it is best known as a base for some of the finest diving and snorkelling in the Pacific, with coral reefs, drop-offs and famous World War II wrecks, including aircraft and ships from the intense fighting that swept the Solomons. Nearby lie Kennedy Island, associated with the future US president John F. Kennedy and his PT-109 crew, and gateways to the beautiful Vona Vona and Marovo lagoons. Gizo offers island culture, markets and a laid-back tropical pace rather than resort development. The climate is warm and humid year-round; the drier, calmer months are generally best for diving and boat travel.
