Gan is the southernmost inhabited island of the Maldives, part of Addu Atoll (Seenu) which sits just south of the equator - the far tip of the island nation, well away from the resort clusters near the capital. Gan is unusual for the Maldives: several of Addu Atoll's islands, including Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo, are linked by a causeway and road, so you can cycle or drive between local island communities in a way rarely possible elsewhere in the country. The island has a distinctive history as a former British Royal Air Force base, and today Gan International Airport is the gateway to the atoll. The area is known for excellent diving and snorkelling - including manta rays and the wreck of the British Loyalty - lush vegetation, and an authentic local-island atmosphere. The drier north-east monsoon (December to April) is generally the most settled.
