Fregate Island is a small, beautiful granite island in the Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean, the easternmost of the granitic Inner Islands of the archipelago, off the coast of East Africa. It is a private island, home to a single secluded luxury resort, and is famous above all as a haven for wildlife and conservation. Fregate is best known for its Aldabra giant tortoises, which roam free in their thousands, and for the Seychelles magpie robin, a rare bird brought back from the very edge of extinction here, along with lush restored forest, seabirds and superb beaches. It is a lovely, unspoilt island of granite hills, palm forest and white sand, a showcase of Seychelles nature. Fregate is reached by small aircraft and by boat from the main island of Mahe, a short hop away. The climate is warm and tropical all year, with a wetter northwest-monsoon season.
