Fredericia is a historic town and port in Denmark, on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula, on the strait known as the Little Belt, close to the bridges that link Jutland with the island of Funen. It is best known as a fortress town: founded in the seventeenth century, it is surrounded by great ramparts, among the largest and best-preserved in northern Europe, which today form a green park around the old centre and recall the town's military past. Fredericia is part of the Triangle Region of eastern Jutland, together with the neighbouring towns of Kolding and Vejle, and is an important railway and industrial hub. It is a pleasant, green town of history and nature by the water. Fredericia is reached by road and rail, and the nearest airport with scheduled flights is Billund, some way to the west. The climate is temperate and maritime, with mild summers and cool, changeable winters.
