Freetown is the capital and largest city of Sierra Leone, a hilly, vibrant port city on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, set on a peninsula where forested mountains meet the sea. Founded as a settlement for freed slaves, it has a rich history reflected in landmarks such as the historic Cotton Tree and the old Krio architecture, and it serves as the country's political, economic and cultural heart. For many travellers its greatest draw is the string of beautiful beaches along the Freetown Peninsula - River No. 2, Tokeh, Bureh and others - backed by rainforest, along with the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in the hills above the city.
