Fakarava Airport is the gateway to Fakarava atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago of French Polynesia, a small airfield near the northern village of Rotoava that provides the only practical access to this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Flights arrive from Tahiti (Papeete) on Air Tahiti, sometimes via the neighbouring atoll of Rangiroa, connecting one of the world's premier diving destinations to the outside world. From the airport, the atoll opens up: the village of Rotoava with its pensions and dive centres, the vast turquoise lagoon, pink-sand beaches, pearl farms, and the famous Garuae and Tumakohua passes where grey reef sharks gather in their hundreds. Fakarava is a place for divers, snorkellers and lovers of remote island quiet rather than resort tourism. The warm tropical climate makes the drier months, roughly May to October, the most popular time to fly in.
