Fakahina is a small, remote coral atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia, in the South Pacific, far to the east of Tahiti. It is a classic low atoll, a ring of coral and palm-covered islets around a lagoon, with a small community living on the main village, sustained by fishing, coconuts and the traditional life of the Tuamotus. Fakahina is one of the more isolated and rarely visited atolls of this vast, scattered archipelago, without resorts or tourism, of interest for its remoteness, its lagoon and reef, and its authentic island life. The Tuamotus as a whole are known for their spectacular diving and their pearl farming. Fakahina is reached by infrequent flights to its small airstrip and by supply ship, so a visit needs planning and connections through Tahiti. The climate is warm and tropical, with a wetter, cyclone-risk season and a drier season.
