FAG is the airport code for Fagurholsmyri, a tiny airfield in the southeast of Iceland, on the flat coastal plain beneath the great Vatnajokull ice cap, Europe's largest glacier. It is a small strip serving a very sparsely populated region rather than a scheduled passenger airport; most travelers reach this part of Iceland by the ring road that runs along the south coast. The surrounding area is one of Iceland's most spectacular, home to Skaftafell, part of Vatnajokull National Park, with its glaciers, black-sand plains and the famous Svartifoss waterfall, and, a little further east, the extraordinary Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, where icebergs drift on the water, and the black sands of Diamond Beach. The area is reached mainly by road along the south coast from Reykjavik. The climate is cool, wet and windy, milder than the latitude suggests.
