EPI is the airport code associated with Epi, a large volcanic island in the Shefa province of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific, at the northern end of the Shepherd Islands, between the main islands of the group. Epi is a long, green, mountainous island of volcanic origin, with a highest point, Mount Pomare, rising over 800 metres, and coasts of black-sand and coral beaches. Its best-known spot is Lamen Bay, on the northwest coast, a sandy bay with reefs where dugongs, the gentle sea mammals, are sometimes seen, along with turtles. A quiet, traditional island of villages, gardens and coast, well off the tourist track, Epi is a place of natural beauty and Melanesian island life. It is served by small airfields, at Lamen Bay and Valesdir, with flights from the capital, Port Vila. Epi is reached by small aircraft and by boat. The climate is warm and tropical, with a wetter, cyclone-risk season.
