Enshi is a city in the far south-west of Hubei Province, China, the capital of the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture - a mountainous, karst region of dramatic canyons, green peaks and minority culture. It is best known as the gateway to the Enshi Grand Canyon, a spectacular landscape of deep gorges, karst pillars and the famous One Incense Rock, and to other scenic areas such as the Tenglong Cave, one of the largest cave systems in China, and the Nushui River. The prefecture is home to the Tujia and Miao peoples, whose culture, architecture and festivals give the region a distinctive character, and it is also known for its tea and its cool, misty summers. Served by Enshi Xujiaping Airport and high-speed rail, the city is an increasingly popular escape into western Hubei's mountains. Late spring to autumn is the best season for the canyons and scenery.
