Dwangwa is a small town on the central lakeshore plain of Malawi, in the Nkhotakota district, close to the western shore of Lake Malawi. It is best known as a centre of sugar production - the surrounding estates and mill make it an agricultural and industrial town - set in the warm, low-lying country between the lake and the escarpment. For travellers, Dwangwa is chiefly a point on the lakeshore route through central Malawi, near the beaches and calm waters of Lake Malawi and within reach of the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, one of the country's oldest and largest protected areas, in the hills to the west. It is a working town rather than a resort, though the lake and reserve nearby are the real draws. The climate is warm year-round with a wet season roughly November to April; the cooler, drier months are the most comfortable for travel.
