Djoemoe, also spelled Djumu, is a village in the interior of Suriname, in South America, deep in the rainforest of the country's south, on the Upper Suriname river. It lies in a remote region of dense tropical forest and rivers, in the heartland of the Saramaccan Maroons, descendants of formerly enslaved Africans who escaped into the interior and built their own communities and culture along the rivers, keeping strong African-rooted traditions. Djoemoe is a river village rather than a tourist destination, though the wider Upper Suriname river region is increasingly visited for its rainforest, its river life and its Maroon culture, with small eco-lodges. Djoemoe is reached by dugout canoe and boat along the river, and by a small airstrip, so a journey here is through the forest interior. The climate is hot, humid and very rainy, typical of the Amazon-basin rainforest.
