Shangri-La is a city in the far north-west of Yunnan Province, China, the capital of the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, set on a high plateau at around 3,300 metres where Yunnan meets the Tibetan world. Originally called Zhongdian, it was renamed Shangri-La in 2001 after the mythical paradise in James Hilton's novel, and it lives up to the billing as a gateway to Tibetan culture and Himalayan scenery.
