Dharamshala is a hill town in the Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh, in the Indian Himalayas, world-famous as the home of the Dalai Lama and the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile. The town rises in two parts: lower Dharamshala, the administrative centre, and the higher hillside suburb of McLeod Ganj, the heart of the Tibetan community, with its monasteries, prayer wheels, cafes and the Dalai Lama's temple complex. Set against the steep, forested slopes of the Dhauladhar range, it is a place of Tibetan Buddhist culture, mountain scenery and a relaxed traveller atmosphere, popular for meditation and yoga retreats, cafes and easy access to the high country - the Triund ridge above town is a classic short trek. Dharamshala also has an international cricket stadium in one of the most scenic settings in the sport. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.

Most visitors stay in McLeod Ganj, which is what people usually mean by a trip to Dharamshala.
How do I get to Dharamshala?
By air to the nearby Kangra (Gaggal) airport with flights from Delhi, by train to the Kangra valley on the narrow-gauge line or to Pathankot and onward by road, or by overnight bus from Delhi. Once there, local taxis and buses climb the hill to McLeod Ganj. Mountain roads can be slow and winding.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons, with clear mountain views and pleasant temperatures ideal for walking and the Triund trek. The monsoon around July and August brings heavy rain, while winters are cold with snow on the heights - atmospheric but chilly. Aim for the shoulder seasons.
