Desroches is a small, remote coral island in the Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean, one of the Outer Islands, lying around 230 kilometres southwest of the main island of Mahe. Unlike the mountainous granite islands at the heart of the Seychelles, Desroches is a low, flat coral island, part of the Amirantes group, ringed by long white-sand beaches, coconut palms and a shallow lagoon, with a coral reef falling away into the deep just offshore. It is one of the most exclusive and unspoilt islands in the country, known above all for its superb diving and its sense of complete escape, on the edge of the great Desroches drop-off. Desroches is reached by air, on short flights of under an hour from Mahe, into its airstrip. The climate is warm and tropical all year, cooled by the sea breeze, with a hotter, wetter season and a slightly cooler, breezier one.
