Decimomannu is a town in southern Sardinia, Italy, in the Campidano plain a short distance north-west of the island's capital, Cagliari. It is best known not as a tourist destination but for the Decimomannu Air Base, a long-established military airfield used by the Italian Air Force and allied forces for training, which gives the town its main profile. For travellers, Decimomannu is really a point on the map near far greater attractions: Cagliari, with its historic Castello quarter, beaches and museums, is close by, and the wider region offers the beaches of the south coast, the ancient Nuragic sites for which Sardinia is famous, and the island's distinctive food and culture. The Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers and mild winters; late spring to early autumn is the prime season for Sardinia's coast and countryside.
