David is the capital of Chiriqui Province in western Panama, the country's third-largest city and the commercial hub of its western highlands and Pacific lowlands, served by Enrique Malek International Airport. A hot, low-lying provincial city, David is above all a gateway: it is the launch point for the cool highland towns of the Chiriqui mountains, most famously Boquete, a coffee-growing town in a green valley beneath Volcan Baru - Panama's highest peak - known for its coffee farms, cloud forest, hiking, birdwatching (including the resplendent quetzal) and adventure sports. The province also offers Pacific beaches, hot springs and the highlands of Cerro Punta and Volcan. David itself is a practical base with services, markets and transport connections near the Costa Rican border. The drier season, December to April, is the most popular time to visit.
