Coro is a historic city in the northwest of Venezuela, the capital of Falcon State, near the Caribbean coast at the base of the Paraguana Peninsula. One of the oldest cities in Venezuela, founded in 1527, Coro has a beautifully preserved colonial old town of earthen and colourful buildings, churches and cobbled streets, which, together with its nearby port of La Vela, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the finest colonial ensembles on the continent. Near the city are the remarkable Medanos de Coro, a landscape of shifting sand dunes unusual for the tropics, protected as a national park. The nearest airport is at Coro itself, with the larger cities of Venezuela reached by air and road. Coro is a gateway to the history and coast of Falcon. The climate is hot and dry for the region, with a semi-arid feel near the dunes.
