Catalao is a city in the far south-east of Goias state, in central Brazil, near the borders with Minas Gerais and the Triangulo Mineiro. It is an important industrial and mining centre - the surrounding region holds significant deposits of niobium and phosphate, and the city hosts major agricultural-machinery and processing industries - making it one of the economic anchors of south-eastern Goias. Set in the cerrado uplands, Catalao is a working city with a historic centre, regional festivals and a strategic position on the highway routes between Goias, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo. It is more a commercial and industrial hub than a tourist destination, though it serves as a regional centre for the surrounding farming and mining country. Central Brazil has a tropical climate with a wet summer and a dry winter; the drier months from May to September are the most comfortable for travel.
