Caledonia lies on the remote Caribbean coast of the Guna Yala region of eastern Panama, in the Darien - and its name carries a remarkable history. Caledonia Bay was the site of the Darien scheme, the disastrous attempt by the Kingdom of Scotland in the late 1690s to found a colony, New Caledonia, and control an overland trade route between the Atlantic and Pacific. The venture collapsed within a couple of years, with most settlers dying, and the site - once New Edinburgh, later Puerto Escoces - is today part of the autonomous Guna homeland. This is a deeply remote stretch of coast: the domain of the Guna people, reached by sea or air rather than road, near the notoriously impassable Darien Gap. It is a place of history and isolation rather than tourist facilities, and the wider Darien is a region where travellers must weigh current security advice carefully.
