Caicara del Orinoco is a river town in Bolivar state, southern Venezuela, on the north bank of the great Orinoco River at a point where the river bends and the northern plains (Llanos) meet the Guayana highlands to the south. Historically a trading and river-transport hub, it is a crossing and staging point on the routes between the Llanos, the Orinoco and the remote south toward Amazonas state, with a ferry linking the two banks. It is a working provincial town rather than a tourist destination, of interest mainly for its river setting and its role in the geography of the Orinoco basin. Travellers should note that Venezuela as a whole is subject to serious travel advisories from many governments; anyone considering the region should rely on current official advice. The tropical climate has a marked wet season (roughly May to November) that shapes river levels and travel.
