Bulgan is a remote district (sum) of Khovd Province in far-western Mongolia, in the Mongolian Altai near the border with China. It should not be confused with the larger Bulgan Province in the north of the country - this Bulgan sits deep in the west, and is best known for the Bulgan-Takashiken border crossing, a remote but increasingly important gateway that connects western Mongolia with Xinjiang in China and serves as a major route for coal and mineral exports. For travellers, this is the rugged frontier country of the Mongolian Altai: high mountains, semi-desert, nomadic herding culture including Kazakh eagle-hunters in the wider region, and vast, empty landscapes. It is far off the standard tourist trail, reached by long overland journeys or flights to the provincial capital Khovd. Summer (June to September) is the practical travel season; winters are severe.
