Dalanzadgad is the capital of Omnogovi (South Gobi) Province in southern Mongolia, and the main gateway to the Gobi Desert - one of the great wilderness destinations of Central Asia. A small provincial town on the edge of the desert, it is where most Gobi journeys begin, served by an airport with flights from Ulaanbaatar as well as the long overland route south. From Dalanzadgad, travellers reach the region's headline sights: the dramatic Yolyn Am, a deep ice-filled gorge in the Gurvan Saikhan mountains; the vast Khongoryn Els sand dunes, the singing sands of the Gobi; and the Bayanzag flaming cliffs, famous for their red rock and the dinosaur fossils first unearthed there. This is a landscape of desert, mountains, nomadic herders and enormous skies. The continental climate brings hot summers and bitterly cold winters; summer, roughly May to September, is the main travel season.
